Working with young people aged 9 to 16 whose lives are affected by their caring role
Meet the Team
A young carer is someone who looks after, or helps to care for, a family member who has a long-term physical or mental health illness, or physical, learning or sensory disability, or who cares for someone in the family with a drug or alcohol addiction.
Young carers may provide hands-on caring, and/or may be affected themselves by someone in their family who needs care.
The effects of caring vary with the family and the young person. These range from additional household tasks or caring for other siblings, or helping someone with medication or dressing.
Young people who help to care for someone may feel isolated. They may worry more compared to other people their age. They may find they have to grow up fast and be dependable, and may not have much time for a social life themselves.
Some young people who have a caring role have always been a carer, and many are very proud of what they do to help their families.
Suffolk Young Carers Project also works in partnership with schools to identify and support young carers through our Schools Work project.
