Suffolk Family Carers

Schools Work

Schools Work picture

Based on the 2001 census it has been estimated that there are 4000 young carers in Suffolk, this could mean there are around 30 young carers in any school. Caring can have a negative impact on a child or young person’s achievements and attendance in school. It is often difficult to identify these young carers as some may be reluctant to tell friends and teachers for fear of stigma, bullying or not being taken seriously.

The Suffolk Young Carers Project recognises the need to work in partnership with schools to identify and support young carers.

Suffolk Young Carers in collaboration with Educational representatives have produced a Leaflet for Teachers at Secondary schools, with information on how to identify and support young carers. Further information can be found following the links below. We are also currently working on a support document for PSHE Programmes in schools and a leaflet for primary schools.
